So I have anti virus on my Mac because I cannot connect to my colleges wifi network with out it. It found some virus called genie, i re started the Mac and turned it back on and I got progress bar on boot.

So then I reset pram and restored permission and it still won't boot. I am now restoring from backup this is very weird.

Any ideas of what the h*ll happened?

Was the virus Genieo and not genie perhaps?

That is adware that is packaged with software from some download sites like CNet's Download.com and Softonic.

If you recently installed software from one of these sites, the malware was likely installed along with it.

Try running this adware scanner to get rid of it.
