Well now this box is well used...

I estimate it not only delivered the 170 to me, but been through 12 moves.

Ah--h, just a box? Show us the PowerBook 170 still working (?) after 12 moves...

That PB170 was the first PB that I used. I worked in a service shop, and got a new 170 to use for shop diagnostics, and other service records. I used it for a couple of years, then moved on. Nice machine at the time.

Lol yep just the box. I remember getting a 33.6K internal modem, wrote postgame press releases during the second half, was able to just plug it in and FAX (!) to all the newspapers. Heaven!

A few months ago I happened across my first modem. 120 baud. Not 120 MB or 120 K...120 baud.

I remember using a 300 baud modem on my Commodore-64 (!)
Wanted to download a (huge) 80MB game. Took about 3 hours!
Now, an 80 MB download usually doesn't have time to show a progress bar...

80 MB would take almost a month at 300 baud. And the C64 wouldn't be able to handle that anyway. You're probably thinking 80 KB or something.

BTW, my first modem was 110 baud. It was such a big upgrade to get a 1200 baud modem a few years later.

...
Of course you are correct! That's just another example of how technology (and tech capabilities) gets "mis-remembered" over time (by me, not you).
That had to be an 80 KB download (not 80M), downloaded to the RAM expansion card, which added a full 512 kB (!) temporary storage. I get so used to using GB and TB, downloading even 8 or 10 GB in less than 5 minutes, that 80 kB seems completely unreal now.
That download might have been GEOS (not a game), or some additional software to use with GEOS - I just don't remember now. I do remember starting the download before going to bed, waking up in the middle of the night to disconnect the modem.
