Went to backup phone and it erased everything!

I went to get the new iOS 6, and in the middle of the back up it said an error occured. Now my phone has the symbol on it telling me that I need to plug it up to iTunes. When I do, it says that I have to restore it. It wouldn't let me create a backup point either. Am I totally out of luck?

Hope you had some previous backups saved from before.
