I asked three different folks (Apple employees) if the smart cover would work on my iPad 3 and all of them said they weren't sure and wouldn't know till it comes out. Really??? Bought one anyway but was a little surprised at that answer because I thought I read somewhere Apple had stated officially they do.

How would it fit though isn't the new iPad bigger with a bigger casing?
So pretty much a replica chinese eBay knockoff smart cover would fit? If so I'll probably get one for the time being.

I don't know if they were playing dumb to not alert folks buying iPad 2s that a new one was coming out or what. When I paid for my smartcover, the guy in front of me was buying a Apple TV and the rep didn't say a word about the new 1080p version coming out Friday. Even though the guy asked him if it played 1080p content. So maybe I was a jerk but I stepped in and told him if I were him I would wait till Friday when the 1080p version comes out for the SAME price and the the apple guy looked at me like I wasn't supposed to say anything.
It's 0.6mm thicker than the iPad 2, practically negligible when it comes to something like the Smart Cover that only ever covers one surface of the device.
