An Island in the Salish Sea
The Global Peace Index has recently announced this year's rankings of nation's "Peace Index". Canada moved up from 14th to 8th. We're #8! We're #8!

Global Peace Index

From the Toronto Star article:
The Global Peace Index, which measures a complex array of 23 indicators ranging from levels of militarization to internal strife, incarceration and murder rates, placed Canada 8th internationally in 2011, jumping from 14th the previous year.

Imagine where we would have been without the G20 protests, and our involvement in Libya. I'm looking at you, Mr Harper.

Go my neighbours in New Zealand — number 2!

Japan number 3. I guess they don't factor the war on whales into these figures.

How is Somalia the worst? I thought for sure Iraq or Afghanistan would take the top spot right now.

Somalia- no central government- run almost entirely by [warring] warlords. Two words- Blackhawk Down. The current situation is not much better than in '93 during the Battle of Mogadishu. Afghanistan and Iraq have central governments (and external security forces) which contribute to more stability and peace.

Convenient since the US said they can't have a military after losing in WWII. Just sayin.

Japan does have a military, they're known as the 'Japan Self-Defense Forces.' They are simply limited in size and were monitored closely during the cold war, however now they are an integral part of U.S. Military forces in the pacific theatre.

You know what I mean. They can't declare war on anyone, etc.

Actually it was the Japanese themselves, according to MacArthur, who suggested Article 9 in their constitution forbidding a standing military. Throughout the years it has been the Japanese who have been both vocal critics of the Article and defenders of it. Some Japanese even have suggested it doesn't go far enough as it permits a defense force. I don't believe the US has applied any pressure one way or the other on this matter, least of all not since the Korean War. They seemed to have embraced pacifism as a nation.

It's too bloody cold to be anything but peaceful! Go Canucks!:D

Tell that to Southern Ontario today.... 40ºC with the humidity (104ºF)... Yikes! ..and it's only May.

Go Canucks!!! Basically, Vancouver shuts down at about 4:30pm tomorrow.

For bonus points.... when did Vancouver last win the Stanley Cup?

US is 82... Hew does that not surprise me?

"Sweeeet! it's already dark over there. Let's attack 'em in their sleep!"

Easy one. 1915. Vancouver Millionaires. I listen to CBC as well. ;)

Yep. Years before the Bruins were even gleam in someone's eye. :D

My wife is helping to organize a conference in Vancouver that opens on the day the finals go to a 7th game in Vancouver - if necessary.

They've identified traffic as being a potential issue for that evening's conference event. I'd say they'll be luck to get anyone out to the event.
