And it's now official--Big Mac is the #3 supercomputer in the world:

That puts the G5 cluster ahead of servers using MORE 3.06GHz Xeon processors, almost as many 1.5GHz Itanium2 processors, and way more 2GHz Opteron processors.

We may now officially brag that for $5.2M a university bought a bunch of G5s, ran them on Panther, and put together the 3rd fastest supercomputer in the world.

By the by, this is not exactly a meaningful comparison, since many other factors are involved (interconnects, architecture, optimization, the OS), but I thought it was interesting: If you run a quick Rmax/processor calculation on the top computers listed, the G5 scores better than any other processor on there; about 18% better than the P4 3.06, 5% better than the Itanium2 1.5, and a whoping 63% faster than the Opteron 2.0.

Yes, it's probably meaningless, but I still find it interesting.
