Hello,

I might replace my 8 Plus with a cheap refurbished newer one that will get major updates for some years again and need the biggest display possible, everything else isn't really important, except one thing...

Does anyone know if the 12 or 13 Pro Max had USB 3 in the Lightning port?

For the first iPad Pro in 2015 this was already possible.

According to Wikipedia:
The first-generation iPad Pro (12.9-inch models only), and the second-generation iPad Pro, are the only devices in which the Lightning connector supports USB 3.0
Based on iFixit finding a USB 3.0 host controller in a teardown:

No iphone before the 15pro

Then I have to wait a few years with upgrading. I don't pay almost 1.200 Euro (what a 3rd Party refurbished Pro Max costs) for USB 2.0 in 2024.

A 13 Pro Max would be half the price.

Don’t buy 3rd party refurbs. That doesn’t mean anything. Only apple refurbs.

The 15pro 128gb starts new at 920€ ebay or 1000€ amazon in Germany. And it has USBC 3.1 speed

Yeah the max is 150€ more

I'm having a look at Apple refurbs too. But they are much more expensive. Maybe I'll have a look at Amazon, from eBay I'm out since many years. was always too much hassle. Also it has to be at least 256GB.

But as I said, i want a cheap phone with a big display. I purchased a refurbed SE 2022 with 256GB in April for 450 Euro and a 2020 with 256 for 205 Euro. The speed of the 2020 is more then enough for me.
I just need a second phone with a bigger screen, so I got two (gave one to my brother) 8 Plus with also 256 GB for about 150-160 Euro too at the same time, ordered all at once with an iPad Air 3 and iPad 9.
The main reason for the 8 Plus and SE an those iPads was keeping TouchID and Home Button. I don't need better cameras and all this stuff and FaceID would be disabled.

When I get one for cheap with a big screen I don't need the others anymore, but keep 2 as spare phones, what I always had. They will replace the 4s with a good and 5 with a dead battery.

My main phone in the last years was an SE 2016 what I used for almost nothing, I also had a 6 Plus but gave it to my brother, when he smashed his 6. My original 8 Plus has my mother since 5 years because I was too sick and it was just lying around. He got the second 8 Plus now, because he had a space problem on his Xs with only 64GB. It was supposed for my mum, that when her's get a problem or lost after using it so long, she doesn't need to learn anything new. I am always giving away my phones for free to family members, but wouldn't pay much for my own, if I feel I don't need it.

I don't want to pay for things I don't use. And the port is a thing I would use for Backup to Mac, Ethernet and external drives not only for charging. But a 15 Pro (Max) with at least 256 GB is not worth the price for only a faster port and without TouchID and tuned off FaceID. So I'll just wait.

Eidt: If I new shortly after those purchases, I'll get back into beta testing again and I knew about all this stuff with 3rd-party AppStores and that I would like iOS 18 very much, I might have acted differently in April. But it was shortly after that when I began testing iOS 17.x betas after years of not even updating at all. I didn't have the port in mind at that time too.
