Hello,
I currently work on MacBook Pro with 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor / 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 Memory / OS X 10.8.2 (12C60) Software (if any of that matters to my issue below!)
I bought a Western Digital 4TB External HD about 6 months ago to watch Movies and TV shows directly through my Sony BluRay players and Telstra T-Box (I have a WD 2TB which was a breeze to format and have never had an issue). I formatted the new 4TB HD using Disk Utility as MS-DOS (FAT32) and had no issues with it for a while but then gradually, some new files I would transfer onto it would not read when watching through the Sony BluRay. Then one night all of the files appeared on screen with Wingding text and none would read.
I took it back and swapped it for another one assuming I was just unlucky to get a dodgy one.
When I go into Disk Utility to format it, I don't have any MS-DOS option (as all of the tutorials I've read say to choose). All I have is ExFAT and the usual Mac OS and Windows NT options. So I've gone to the Partition tab, selected 1 Partition, renamed it and chosen MS-DOS (FAT) format option (other forums have noted that this is the same as FAT32 - please tell me if that's wrong). In the "Options" section I have selected GUID Partition Table, clicked OK and Applied the selections. This all seems to work - in the Finder window when I select the HD on the left and hit Command+I the Info window that pops up tells me that the drive is formatted to MS-DOS (FAT32).
I can transfer files and all seems fine when it's plugged into my MacBook. But when I plug it in to my Sony BluRay or Telstra T-Box none of them even recognise that it's plugged in. The white light on the front of the HD is on but not flashing as it does when my other HDs are plugged in and the loud whirring sound they normally make when they're reading the files doesn't happen.
Are these HDs just not readable by Sony BluRays anymore or am I doing something wrong when formatting my new HD? I've had no issues with any of my other external HDs having gone through the same formatting process - so this is extremely frustrating!
I'm close to throwing the thing out the window so if anyone can help me with my problem, I (and my window) would be very grateful!
