I don't know how long it's been available (obviously not very), but Western Digital now sells a 500GB version of the Scorpio Black, the WD5000BEKT. I'm not desperate to try it myself, but I thought others might be interested in buying this drive and testing it out since I know we have a lot of Western Digital fans here. If anyone does buy this drive feel free to post your thoughts here.

Wd5000bekt

I got a WD5000BEKT scorpio black and installed it 2 days ago into a Macbook pro 2008 2.4ghz. Drive is running very smoothly - very quiet, no vibration and is running much cooler than the old stock Hitachi drive. No obvious loss in battery performance either. Will see how I go over the next month :)

About to buy one for my Early 2008 15" MBP.

Any reviews, tests or anything else can help us to find out if is the first run of these HDDs good, to avoid any Rev. A issues? Maybe these are like some Apple products, unfortunately...
Just kiddin'. :D

It benchmarks slightly faster than the Hitachi TravelStar 7K500. Tom's Hardware has it up on one of their charts and you can also see some benchmarks here: http://forums.storagereview.com/index.php/topic/28824-wd-scorpio-black-500gb-real-world-benchmarks/. Those same forums also have a thread on the drive.

Wasn't that drive available long time before June?
Well, Seagate already announced their 750GB 7200RPM 9.5mm-high drive.
No, it was not.

Seagate can announce whatever they like but they will never see a dime of my money as long as they continue to produce unreliable crap.

I just put one in my new MBP 13". $69.99 with free shipping from Newegg.

Seems to boot up a few seconds faster, nice and quiet. Can't say about temp or battery life as I only have had the MBP a week or so and it was a pretty immediate upgrade.

Carbon Copy Clone and Winclone worked perfect to transfer the partitions to the new drive, pretty simple and easy upgrade.
