How would people describe the daily role for a CEO? For instance, are they in the office every day? Or can/do they work from afar, especially in a global company? How much does the role vary?

COOs tend to be in charge of the day-to-day running of a company, but how close to this is the CEOs job?

CEOs develop strategy, vision, culture etc, but this is quite broad.

Not all companies have a COO and a CEO. Large companies generally have both positions. The CEO is responsible for all of the company. He (or she) is the captain of the ship, so to speak. The CEO has the final word on any decisions the company makes.

Often if a COO is required, you'll find other positions such as CFOs and any other 'Chief _____ Officer' titles as all these simply help take the workload off the CEO. A COO would take care of the operational matters of the company, just as the CFO would take care of the financial matters.

Right, but what do they actually do?

Steve Jobs talked about spending his time meeting with teams of people. So he's working day, it seemed, would be at the office (campus) meeting with the different teams that were working on their products.

The CEO of the company my sister works at now works mainly from home - in a different country.

But obviously both effectively do the same thing: direct the company, steer the ship.
