Seems like the most impersonal, useless and solution-to-a-non-existant-problem device that Apple has come out with.

It's not replacing my TV. My whole family isn't buying a bunch of these to sit down on the sofa together, plugged into the wall behind a pair of goggles to enjoy a film 'together'. Even if I lived alone, I can't invite anyone over to watch anything.

Would be great as a travel device to watch movies, but not with a 2hr battery life and what seems like quite a substantial brick.

VisionOS seems incredibly restricted, limiting you to what work you can do.

I'm certainly not using this thing to "capture and relive precious moments"

"daddy, take a photo of us pleeeeease!"

"ok, ok, hold on let me get my Apple Vision Pro out of my backpack"

"daddy, are you ready yet????"

"almost there, one sec darling, just attaching the battery and booting it up. Ok... say cheeeese!"

later in the evening back at home

"Mommy, where's daddy?"

"Oh honey, he's just in the other room with his Apple Vision Pro reliving a precious moment™ with you"

"Can I see, can I see?"

"Yes, but we can only share this precious moment™ that we had together separately because we only have one Apple Vision Pro"

...

Literally the only use case for it seems to be sitting alone at home with a safari private window open playing your 'special' VR videos.

I feel like you’re really missing the point in the second half of your comments. The next iPhone and subsequent devices almost certainly have the ability to take these 3D photos and videos that this headset is so tailor made for. They cant show any of that now because the other hardware is unannounced, but no chance they developed this tech and software and are keeping it off the Pro iPhones. This will just be a very immersive and exciting way to experience them.

Almost every example they showed of “how cool” the front display of the eyes is had me cringing and made me want to scream “No, just take it off to talk to them!” Seriously my instant reaction to seeing somebody wearing this thing while having a conversation with someone IRL is basically the same as if they were staring at a phone or tablet.

In my mind there are a couple of scenarios that come up: Exchanging a few quick words or acknowledgement where the entire exchange is over in 10 seconds or less, and eye contact isn’t important. OR, a situation where the person deserves your full engagement and you should stop/pause your activity and completely remove the distraction from your head/being.

Maybe if you are in a work situation that requires you remain in VR it makes sense. But if someone enters the room and sits next to you, or your kid wants your attention, it’s either “I’m busy, come back later,” or “Yeah, let me just pause and take this off… What’s up?”

You're not the target market for version 1. That's ok. You don't have to buy everything ever made.

The history of computing:
1. Stuff gets smaller
2. Stuff gets faster
2. Stuff gets cheaper

Come back in 3 years and see if it's more useful to you.

I don’t believe this at all. I imagine the way this camera works is that it effectively a screenshot of the displays in the headset. I bet that trying to to take 3D images with other devices wouldn’t quite match the headsets camera system and image processing, resulting in an unconvincing result at best and a disorienting mess at worst.

To "capture and relive precious moments" you need to wear the damn thing and miss the exact same moment by watching on a tiny screen, which shows you what's right in front of you. It's a product to "get more disconnected from your family while being at home". Any sensible kid would start crying, when daddy's head is stuck in a machine.

3D camera tech is actually pretty mature. Lots of work was done to bring expensive tech from the film industry to broadcast and even consumer devices about 15 years ago. Remember when 3D tv was supposed to be the next big thing to drive next-gen flat panel TV sales?

There have been several 3D and VR cameras, some even as small as a GoPro that could shoot HD video in 3D with a 180-degree field of view. They never went anywhere because VR headsets and Google cardboard were the only way to view the content and there was just no demand.

TLDR: Putting a 3D camera in an iPhone should be pretty easy for Apple.

Gen 1 isn’t the target for this. It’s to show what future versions will be and how useful it will be which will in the end replace current devices

I know they showed an 'immersive' photo being taken on the headset but I would presume you will be able to do the same now, if not soon, on an iPhone. I can certainly see a use case in taking photos outside on your iPhone and then being able to relive them in the headset at home.

Meh, this is DOA. I don't care if it's first gen whatever, I don't see the mass appeal. In today's world of go go go, who's going to spend time immersed in photos. No one, there is so much content generated it's all a blip on the radar these days. The only use case I see which could be interesting is some artistic/3d creative way by removing the stylist and actually using your hands to create.

But this all depends on how well it works. If the iPad is any kind of benchmark then those limitations will be equally present in this device, and by the time you compensate for those challenges by say adding a keyboard and mouse, or whatever, you might was well use something else.

well, if you traveled a lot you could have three giant monitors and do real work on a plane with just a little keyboard and trackpad. And in the hotel room for that matter. Worried about the battery? Airplanes have usb ports for power.

Will it justify 3.5K? if you have a travel lifestyle then I think so. Im curious to know how well the monitors-in-space are for doing work...i.e focusing on them, creating text, ppts, excel work, xcode, etc.

Nobody is going to just put this headset on and stare at photos, that's a silly notion.

You are entirely missing the point. Do you own headphones? Why? You cant listen to music with anyone else! Not to mention that watching tv is only one of the 1000s use cases.

It's the iPad reveal all over again, because everything you just said is what people on this forum said about the iPad

Time is a flat circle.

Have you been paying attention with the posts around this place? Might not seem so silly.

The only way it can work if this 1 device can re-place all your existing devices/laptop.
But I doubt it, and I've heard the battery life is only close to 2 hours. But do you really want to wear something like this for 2 hours? Not me, I don't even wear glasses.

Vision Pro has amazing hardware, but it lacks- ironically- vision. No one has ever been able to find a mainstream use for something like this and it doesn’t seem like Apple has either.
It has vision, but the vision is “if only these were like reading glasses”, which won’t be achieved within any foreseeable timeframe.

It’s a ridiculously overpriced product right now, however, this is the first step to a product which is essentially going to replace the iPhone (apples biggest selling product). This is beta device and the first in a long line of beta devices until the line has matured to the point that it will be a pair of glasses.

It wouldn’t surprise me if these were made for testing purposes, and Tim decided that with a spruce up and some decent marketing these could actually be sold to the consumer.

This is essentially early access and a peak into the future of computing, and if you want to experience that then it’s going to set you back $3500, if that doesn’t interest you then save your money and wait for the product line to mature.

Apple are quite clearly entering this product line with a long term goal in mind and quite simply just want to make money along the way.
