Going beyond the usual fair of whether a Mac can play back a blu ray movie or not, there is the question of sites that advertise "blu ray burner" for Macs. In particular one can find internal tray models for the Mac Pro.

Does anyone here know what distinguishes the above from say a blu ray burner for a PC? One can find LG, Pioneer, Sony, Lite On and Panasonic as examples of burners that can mount a disc on a MAC ???

On another note - it appears that often rebranded and OEM blu ray player/burners may not readily have their firmware upgraded as opposed to true name brand models that may provide the firmware upgrades. The point being its another item to be cautious about when buying rebranded or OEM versions of blu ray devices for the Mac. As things change in the blu ray world, it could be possible that a player/burner that is rebranded or OEM get left behinds not being able to read certain discs or more complex discs with challenging start/entry points.

Hopefully someone here knows* what differentiates a "blu ray burner for Mac" from typical name brands and their complement of OEMs.

Thanks in advance
