What app can I use to open .cgi files? Our grade reports at my university are downloaded as .cgi. How can I open this?

I'm assuming you are trying to download it from their site? You probably need to left click the link instead of right click and save as. Either that or you have to rename the file to whatever the extension should be. A .cgi file is a web site script. Most likely you need to run it from the web site and it will give you your report.

Usually you would open a cgi script in a web browser ..... see a .cgi file is like a script that runs on the webserver and displays the info to you on the web browser (very plain explanation) .... I think what you would probably need to do is open the .cgi on the server and the perhaps Save As ....

I've also seen PDFs save as the incorrect format. My insurance bill is this way.

You can also try changing the document's filetype. Just select it, hit enter, and rename it to .pdf. This might fix it.

I tried to open it with firefox and it just came up with a dialog for me to redownload the file.

What you might try doing is opening the .cgi file in a plain text editor. If the file is a PDF or something it might have something near the top that will clue you in to the file type. Worth a shot anyway.

Thanks

changing the file type to .pdf worked for me
thanks for this fabulous forum - it has helped me many times

How to open .cgi files

I just had this problem when trying to download a bank statement. I was using Fire Fox and it was automatically saving the file to my Downloads folder.

I had to change the settings so I could tell fire fox where to save the file, then before I saved the .cgi, I changed the extension to .pdf and it opened without a hitch!

just change the .cgi

I was able to figure it out. Just right click and save as. then change the extension from .cgi to .pdf

This works perfectly. I was having a problem with other graphics and I just changed the extension to .jpeg and it would work. I hope I helped.
