Apple offering free engraving is so brilliant...
Not only does it cost them nothing, but they now don't have to replace your iPad, and you can't return it unless it's DOA. They play it off as "free engraving for loved ones" and "get it personalized free" etc. in addition to not having to take back any engraved iPads.
Proof?
Because it ultimately does NOT matter if they take back an engraved iPad because ALL returned/replaced iPads are given a new battery AND NEW outer shell ANYWAY to be sold as refurbished.

We test and certify all Apple refurbished products and include a 1-year warranty.
All refurbished iPad models also include a brand new battery and outer shell.
So why not take back engraved models? Simply put, because they don't have to.
