Hey, I was wondering what are good programs to use to rip individual episodes off of DVD, and have them in a mpg, avi, etc format?

I am using handbreak, but I am running into trouble with LOST season 6.

I was just wondering if there are any better ones?

1. How to copy (rip) the content of video DVDs to your HDD

As commercial video DVDs use a copy protection scheme called CSS (Content Scramble System), additional software is needed to copy the content of a video DVD to your HDD, which is called "ripping". There are several applications to accomplish this. You can use Mac OS X' DVD Player application or the VLC Player to play back the ripped content stored inside the VIDEO_TS folder without further transcoding.

1.1. MacTheRipper 2.6.6 (free)
Insert the video DVD into your DVD drive and open MacTheRipper and click the GO button, after which you can select the place you want the video DVD's content saved to.
As this version of MTR is quite old, it will not read many modern DVDs.

1.2. RipIt (19.95 USD, trial with 10 rips free)
Insert the video DVD and press the RIP button.

1.3. Fairmount (free) - needs VLC 32-bit to decrypt the CSS (thanks to Satori for that information)

1.4. Mac DVDRipper Pro (9.95 USD)
Insert the video DVD and select a destination folder, then press the RIP button.

Btw, the application is called Handbrake, not handbreak, as it pulls the handbrake on your CPU, but it doesn't break your hand.

I know those programs, but I am saying individual episodes. So you know how most dvd's in tv season boxes have 9 different episodes. I want 9 different files

You know how to select different episodes in Handbrake then?

What exact problems are you experiencing then?

There are multiple of the same length in episode, and I am finding this to be a problem since I already did the conversion and I did not get the full episode.

Does that mean, you select the appropriate title in Handbrake, applied whatever settings you used and hit the START button, but the transcoding process aborted or the file was incomplete? Have you ripped the DVD before or are you using the video DVD as direct source for Handbrake?

Have you got the latest versions of Handbrake and VLC (if you use the video DVD directly)?

No No, I have used it before with a scrubs dvd and it worked perfectly

My problem is that there are 90 titles that are about 46 minutes long

What about the second part of my previous post? Have you ripped the DVD before (thus removing the CSS or any other copy protection scheme) before using Handbrake, or are you using Handbrake with the actual video DVD?

I have not ripped this specific dvd before. Yes I am using the actual LOST season 6 DVD 1

Maybe the descrambler library included with VLC (the version you use), does not work with the CSS used on the Lost DVD (Sony?).

Maybe you try one of the ripping applications out there (four are linked to above) and see, if that helps.

You may want to try using ripit to rip the DVD, then use Handbrake to separate them into seasons. Ripit gives you 10 free rips (but is WELL worth the $20!).

I already have rip it, since I got it in the MacHeist deal pack.
