What will you guys be using the SD slot on your new MBP for? I'm trying to get an idea of what people mainly use it for.

Not all digital cameras have USB 3 or USB-C or the fastest Wi-Fi.

Downloading photos from a camera using a USB cable or Wi-Fi drains the camera's battery very quickly.

Not everyone buys multiple batteries for their camera.

AC adapters for Canon DSLR and other cameras are typically not included and can be quite expensive to buy separately.

I bought a 16" last year and when it leaves my desk (with its Caldigit hub) I tend to have to have to pack SD card reader along with a pile of adaptors and dongles. Just having the 4 thunderbolt ports is a PITA.

I am at the airport. I watch my stuff quite closely, but it only takes a second or two of someone else watching it closer for it to disappear. Fortunately, all my critical files, that no one else need be perusing, are on the SD card in my shirt pocket. When I am in my seat on the plane, I may stick it in the slot to get some serious work done, but once the plane lands and is taxiing to the gate, it gets unmounted and back in my pocket. Just to be safe.

  • Copying things to SD card for my Raspberry Pis
  • Copying things to SD card for my MiSTer
  • getting data on/off my GoPros
  • I actually prefer using SD cards to USB sticks as they're smaller. I have a USB-C/USB-A combo adapter reader for SD cards that I use whenever I need to use them in something without a reader. This means I can use SD cards in anything; it's the only storage media I buy these days.
