I know there was a lot of talk about the gyro apps when the iPhone 4 was first released, but now it is about 8 months later, plenty of time to build up a plethera of gyro using apps. Has much really developed?

I just started thinking about it because I downloaded NOVA 2 and it uses the gyro and seems like it might be pretty nice. I'm at work so I will have to play with it tonight.

First of all what are some really good apps that make use of the gyro, and secondly is there any use for it besides games?

Most of the ones I know integrate it with augmented reality in some way.

One game I have is "Look Up" where you shoot at little UFOs in your room. It overlays them over video from the phone's camera.

UrbanSpoon also uses it when you go to Nearby>Map>Scope and then hold the phone up. It activates the camera and shows you the names of nearby restaurants when you point the phone in different directions.

I think there's also many other map-type apps for things like subway directions. Here's one:

but augemented reality apps have been around since the 3GS with the compass. So what differs in augmented reality when you add the gyro on top of the gps and compass?

I don't think the gyro actually does anything the accelerometer doesn't do. That's why you're having trouble searching.

What it adds is that it makes the information the phone gets more accurate and quick.

I notice that the UFO game runs on a 3GS as well as an i4. I'm assuming that it uses the accelerometer in the 3GS and the gyro in the i4. Just a guess on my part, but that's probably the only difference. It would mean it's slightly more responsive in the i4.

If that's the case then you're not going to find many things that can ONLY use the gyro and ONLY run on the i4.

I mean, if all that stuff is possible on the 3GS (as it all clearly is) then I don't see what the gyro adds except greater precision.

Dunno if it's the gyro or the accelerometer that's utilized in either of these games but, N.O.V.A 2 & Modern Combat 2 are pretty fun. I believe that BattleField Bad Company 2 uses similar methods of "looking" as well.
