Hey all!

I was wondering what are some ideas for a good and enjoyable first job? I live in Irvine, CA if that makes a difference. I like to compose music, I am sociable, highly outgoing, and a leader. I also enjoy working with people and making people happy. I was wondering if anyone could give me some good ideas for a first job? Thanks! :)

Age? Interests? Work Habits? Motivation? Pay?

Answer that bud :)

Don't expect walking into a place and them handing you the key to the CEO office.

But dress like you own the place when you interview. ;)

how old you are will make a big difference...

are you thinking of a part time, minimum wage job, or a full time, more career oriented job?

well i'm 15 right now, and i turn 16 in february. I was looking for like a part time job to earn some extra money during the summer. My motivation is to make people happy. I would preferrably work a job that gives commission or tips or such. (such as Chicks Sporting Goods or a waiter at a restaurant)

Basically i want a job that involves social interaction if you get what i mean

well, being 15 myself...your job options are probably preeeetty limited. You'll have more options when you turn 16. I would just find out what places hire under 16, and apply wherever you can. You can't be too selective when your only a teenager. The only place you'll probably be able to get a waiting job is at like a nursing home. But some places hire bus boys or dishwashers under 16.

Any job you can get probably isn't going to be your ideal job. I work at an auntie anne's pretzel place...not exactly where I would like to be working, but its still an income, which is whats important.

Starbucks! haha, sorry... that's the first thing that came to mind. I interact a lot with my local Baristas! :D Well, I'm thinking anything like Cold Stone would be fun. I'd doubt they'd let you be a waiter at 15 (especially if they serve alcohol), but maybe a job as a busboy?

Wait, are you a boy or girl?

starbucks is what I was thinking too! they pay really well as an added bonus. I'm going to apply there as soon as I turn 16.

My friend Ryan works at Starbucks and he's 18; but, he's been working there for 2 years now and he loves the job even though he says it can get boring making so much coffee for so long. Plus, the people at Starbucks always seem very happy.

its true, they do always look so happy (probably all the caffeine), and they are always so nice, and easy to talk to.

Haha, yup. And if the OP does become a Barista, I hope they can listen to their customers name and get it right. I was getting a tall chai with 7 shots chai, no water, no foam on the Castro st. Starbucks in San Francisco and I told the barista my name (Jesus) and she spelled it "ACES" on the cup... man, I felt like a porn star with that name on my cup.

When I turn 16 that actually sounds pretty cool :D

What is their pay? And how do they treat their workers. Also if anyone knows, does starbucks offer any benefiets?

starbucks usually pays about two dollars more than minimum wage. Where I live, min wage is 6.15, and starbucks pays 8.15 starting out. They are also known for all the benefits they provide for their employees.

Pretty much, its like the awesomest place to work.

Out of curiosity, is that a store, or do you want to work in a chicks women's sporting goods store? :) Just a warning, avoid the word if you end up working for tips. :D

From what I've read you should seriously considering waiting tables. There are several places that, at least once you are 16, you could wait because they don't serve alcohol. I'd go to one, start as a busboy but make it clear from the start that your intention is to be promoted to wait staff. Keep up the attitude and excitement that is present in your posting and they'll be happy to have you aboard.

Keep us up to date on what you end up doing and good luck to you.

Ideas for a first job?

Absolutely anything you can get. Everything is experience, and you have to start somewhere.

I started off as a dishwasher in a restaurant back when I was 16, extremely low pay, but the feeling of earning money was brilliant.

You can't be too picky about what you want to do at that age, get your foot in the door first.

It's also a lot easier to move from job to job when you already have one, as you're earning money at the same time.

I would look for some job where you get tips or where you get commission.

Try working for a golf course if you have a nice one near you. I made great money doing that when I was young.

Before you turn in any applications, I suggest talking to anyone you know and mention that you are looking for a job.

I'm also 15, and I talked to many people, and one person I knew works at an engineering firm and they were looking for an intern. The boss was looking for someone older, but the lady I knew recommended me and I got the job.

Now I get to work on enginerring HVAC projects for the Pentagon and do a bunch of other engineering/computer related things. It is a very cool job for being 15.

Also, the pay is great.

So, ask around, it can really open up great opportunities.
