I personally go naked with iPhone 4S, except for the back I use SGP faux black leather skin just to cover it since it's often in contact/friction with so many surfaces. I don't even use screen protector at all to keep the color and clarity at 100%. No matter how clear a protector is, I don't like middleman :D

Result is not bad at all. Nearly one year later my 4S still relatively pristine, no single mark on antenna band or back. On the screen there are these ultra fine and short scratches if I look really hard at it through direct sunlight, otherwise it's invisible.

Unless you're an active person with extreme physical activities, always go naked :D

I picked up the Speck Candyshell, and was surprised at how thin it was, especially compared to my wife's 4S with Candyshell case. I'm still not completely sold on the rubber edge around the screen. It's a little tough to put into a pocket, if you're wearing pants that aren't baggy, but I do like the rubber edge, since I can put it down and not worry about it sliding around. Overall I'm happy with the case. Build quality seems top notch. I got the glossy black case, since that's what Best Buy had (had a gift card), but wish they had the matte version, since mine's showing some scratches after only about 8 hours. Doesn't really bother me, since that's what a case is for, but I'd probably buy this case again, but in the matte version.
