I have Catalina running on my 16" MBP that I use for coding. If I upgrade to Monterey, is it possible that some programs won't work any longer - for example due to directory changes? Will Catalina keep getting security updates for years to come? What are some reasons to not upgrade?

I am not going to upgrade from Catalina. My late 2013 12" MacBook Pro works fastest here; I've tried Big Sur, and I start to have beachballs, before I didn't. Not going to upgrade my OS, even if I upgrade to a 2017 MacBook Air (i7, 8 GB/128 GB). This is the sweet spot for me and my needs. Can't go earlier, because some of my software wants Catalina at a minimum. Can't go to M1, because I still need a Windows VM for occasional needs at work, when I'm on a remote call and I don't want to have to support another PC. I have Windows Update turned off on the VM, because I don't want the Windows 11 nag screens!

Catalina will stop getting security updates when the successor to Monterey is made public. I'm fine with that.

Nothing wrong with your reasoning, you seem to have your situation under control, and know what you want.

don't upgrade the 2019 16" from Catalina. it will run smooth on Catalina but will get kinda jerky in Big Sur and Monterey. Then you won't be able to go back to Catalina when you reformat as the option won't be available. Monterey runs fantastic on the new M1 Macs though.

I'm not fine with that. I got mine with 64GB of RAM, a Core i9 and a 5600M. I want more use out of it.

I'm hoping that they fix the issues with Monterey on older Macs. But given their direction with Apple Silicon, I have a feeling my 16" may have limited life. But either way, I won't upgrade...for now.

Made the mistake of upgrading my 2019 16" to Monterey.
Everything runs perfectly fine, other the FCPX which now opens libraries or events very slowly!!
Regret upgrading TBH.....
