They house additional screens that have apps that you have downloaded. Swipe left and right and you will see the highlighted dot will change.

Super short, and old, youtube video that shows swiping between screens. The point of this video is to demonstrate a jailbreak add-on (I don't recommend jailbreaking, but this was the first vid I found that was short and sweet and showed the swiping between screens clearly).
