Thought it might be helpful to have community shared ideas on what you do jailbreak wise for you personally.

Once I jailbreak I always go through the following steps in cydia to get my iPhone where I want it:

1. MobileTerminal (and use it to change the default alpine password for secruity)
2. SBSettings (the absolute best reason to jailbreak, makes life easier)
3. Apple.com HD SBSettings (beautiful SBSettings theme for retina display)
4. Five Icon Dock (I am used to a five icon dock from back during my android days)
5. Icon Renamer (in order to remove app icon names from my dock icons)
6. No Badges (to remove those stupid red numbers on gmail, appstore)
7. No Page Dots (to remove those stupid screen indicators)
8. AdBlocker (block ads in safari and pushes brightness toggle to the left side where its easier to press)
9. Infinifolders (I like Androids "app drawer" where you can have all your apps in one place for a clutter free screen )
10. Fullscreen for Safari (I hate how Safari uses alot of precious real estate with those bars. I also love the swipe gestures)
11. Shrink (which I set the icons to be at 66% of their normal size)
12. Springflash (so that I can use my LED light as a flashlight)
13. Springflash SBSettings (an SBSettings toggle to turn on springflash)
14. Remove Background (so I can kill all the excess apps running in the background)
15. Remove Background SBSettings (a toggle to kill all background apps)

Feel free to share your tweaks and screenshots of how your phone looks afterwards :)

If the thread shouldn't have been made I apologize.

1. Bigify - Changes Icon size, Removes Labels & Ability to rotate icons to your liking (not shown)

2. Iconoclasm - Achieve the icon layout shown

3. Weather Icon - Allows the default weather app to show the weather through its icon & up on the status bar

4. Folder Enhancer - Folders in folders & Pages in folders :)

5. Lockdown Pro - Locks certain apps (Passcode required)

6. Multi Icon Mover - IMO best way to manage icons in folders (especially if you have folder enhancer or infini folder)

7. Five Icon Dock - allows 5 apps in the dock very handy :)

8. Barrel - Cool page switching animation :) (the one shown is the zoom one or something like that lol)

You guys have pretty much covered all my favourites, however I'll add a couple to the list:

ShowCase: Changes the letters on the keyboard to show the current case.
Stack: Adds an OSX style stack. I keep this in my dock to allow more apps to sit there. I'll post a screenshot of it.
iBlank: Allows blank icons to be placed on the springboard.
FakeClockUp: Speeds up IOS animations to make the device appear faster.
MakeItMine: Allows for putting a custom carrier and/or banner.

I can't seem to get MakeItMine to work. I previously had it, but now it doesn't want to work. When I try and change it, nothing happens.

Since I just finally upgraded from 4.0 today and redid my JB, I'll add--

PkgBackup--because man, did that ever make the whole process easier!

And these three are all worth JB'ing for individually, because they're all big improvements over stock and actually enhance the usability of the device (the last two are described by previous posters):

BiteSMS--because one text without it was enough to remind me why I jailbreak
FolderEnhancer
SBSettings

I generally try to keep things as stock looking as possible, I go for mostly under the hood modifications. If I do install something that modifies UI, I make sure to only go for things that fit perfectly with the aesthetic the holy Apple church has seen fit to give us.

SMS GV Extension - for native Google voice from the Messages App
Phone GV Extension - for native GV calling from Phone
BiteSMS - best replacement for the native messages app
SBSettings - obvious
Open Notifier - puts a small icon in the title bar, usually just Mail, Facebook, or Trillian
MyWi - Because I refuse to pay $20/mo for tethering
My3G - For Facetime and downloading large apps on 3G
Infinifolders - self explanatory
CyDelete - to delete Cydia apps the way one normally deletes an app
Browser Changer - to set Atomic Web to be my default browser.

question on jailbreaking, If you JB and then make backup on your computer. Can you still restore to pre-jailbreak?

I hate to be 'that guy' but there are so many of these threads in the iPhone Hacks subforum. Most are populated with all different tweaks etc. some over hundreds - isn't it easier to add to those, ever-growing lists.

iRetiner GUI - change all non-Retina optimised app icons into high resolution ones using artwork from iTunes store.

I don't use anything that relies on Mobile Substrate ... I don't trust it.

I can't seem to get MakeItMine to work. I previously had it, but now it doesn't want to work. When I try and change it, nothing happens.

Make it mine does not work with 4.2.1 jailbreak or later jailbreaks. Fake carrier will work though it does the same thing as make it mine.

technically you would have to restore as new device to remove all the jabreak if you wanted to bring it back to apple

you can restore from a back up if you just wanted to remove the jailbreak apps but intended on keeping the phone but to if you were returning it you need to restore as "new device"

Many of the ones already mentioned....a few of my personal ones....

-asktocall
-politesilencer
-notifier+
-activator
-aqwoah theme
-backgrounder
-switchermod
-hide battery
-ifile
-openssh
-photoalbums+
-pkgbackup
-privacy
-talking alerts
-voicemail forwarder
-3gunrestrictor

All legit and paid via Cydia store (although aqwoah is a separate donation to the theme developer).

A few more I just remembered (I'm trying not to repeat ones people have already listed):

FontSwap: Allows you to change the system fonts.
MXTube: Allows you to download and locally store YouTube videos.
GPSPhone: Gameboy and Gameboy Advance Emulator.
Five-Column Springboard: Allows for five icons per row.
MobileMusicPlayer Flip: On the iPod Touch it combines the music and videos apps into one, like on the iPhone.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8H7 Safari/6533.18.5)

LockInfo - godsend if you have tons of daily events. I use Things and the Things pluggin rocks!

BiteSMS - wish it was a bit more stable but if you text alot, you NEED this.

SBSettings - no surprise here.

Anything else is a toy, but these are essential

AppSync - *cough*

some of these have been very useful, cheers, being new to Jailbreak and the not knowing what to search for this has been great. Some of these Apple should really have thought of.

  • MxTube (I like to store my Favorites from YouTube and watch them anytime)
  • TetherMe (People have been getting texts from AT&T and those people were using MyWi and/or PDAnet, so I use this. It's alot cleaner and subtle )
  • BiteSMS (Pretty much why I jailbreak)
  • 3g Unrestrictor (I hate Wi-Fi restrictions and with this, I can watch HD Youtube vids on 3G)
  • Covert (Safari private browsing ;), simply genius and hardly takes up space )
  • Winterboard (I love customizing my icons and UI's)
  • HapticPro (the little vibrations that I feel with each key I press makes me type faster :D)

How do you get the stack? I cant find it

I am using it on my first generation iPod Touch running 3.1.3, so I am not sure if it is still working on newer devices. I do not have the original repository that it is hosted on, however I got mine from the Sinful iPhone repository.

There is a version 3 [alpha, i think], but IMHO buggy on iOS 4

Just found another free tweak that I love off the ispazio repo:

ImaSafari

This tweak allows you to disable images in safari for faster browsing and less data used.

With both this and Fullscreen for Safari my stock browser experience is now perfect :D
