Thinking about going naked on the iPhone X but am worried about the camera lens.

Does anyone have experience with this?

It's an easy job to fix up a rough edge.
You could always put a bit of tape over that "sharp" edge, or bevel the edge yourself, using a bit of emory cloth, or even a fingernail file. (No one else would even be able to see that, unless you choose to tell about your little mod)

I'd say it's a pretty good chance of getting scratched if you don't use a case and lay the phone down on its back a lot.

Used every day since launch without a case. The rest of the back is scratched, but the lens is fine.

Highly unlikely. It’s a sapphire cover, so scratching is gonna be tough. Technically, you can crack it if you slam it on something, but that’s always a risk with or without a case.

I’ve never had a case/protector on any of my phones, ever, and have also never had a compromised camera lens.

My case provides some protection to the lens array since it keeps it from protruding, but the glass covering the lenses is very scratch resistant. I use camera lenses that cost more than the iPhone and I’m pretty picky about keeping my lenses free of scratches and smudges. I’ve never had an iPhone camera suffer from a scratch (knock on wood). One thing I would be careful about is putting a protective film over the camera. It might cause a loss of contrast and an increase in flare.

Don't all cases expose the camera lens anyway?

Most cases leave the camera slightly recessed so that when you lay the iPhone on it’s back the camera doesn’t make contact with the surface. Given how scratch resistant the glass covering the camera is, the case probably helps avoid dirt and smudges more than scratches.

i was asking myself the same thing, i got a case that leaves the camera bump exposed (as is a very slim case) what i should worry then is only the actuall ring surrounding the camer that will get scratched right?

Unless it is an extremely thin case (more like a skin) it will leave the camera recessed enough that the phone won't be resting on its lens when on it's back, as it does while naked.
