I see those as several posters' icons.

I seem to recall them being some kind of application code-in-a-image or links of some kind or something for the Android OS, but I'm probably wrong.

And I can't even google it because I have not the foggiest what they are called!

They are called QR Codes. Most smartphones have a program to read them. They contain text. This text could be a URL, contact information, a string of random characters, or a message. The more dense the little squares are, the longer the text.

Now that I know what it's called, I gave it a Google, found an iPhone app, and scanned it.

That QR code says "On the first day of MacRumors, my true love gave to me, a white Verizon iPhone with 4G."

Haha, that's pretty awesome.

*goes off to look for jessica, for she has one of those as her avatar, too*

EDIT: Hers says "Smoochies - Jessica" :D

I saw one of those on the side of a pizza box. Apparently it had instructions on how to cook the pizza, although I couldn't scan it as I don't have a smartphone. Cool idea though.

That's totally cool! I found the iPhone app and it works real well. Then I made my own after a Google search...

You have outed Jessica. I hope you know what you're in for... These QR avatars could become a sort of underground flame war complete with obscene messages...
