For those of you that have bought the new high end macbook pro 15'', what brand of internal 500gb hard drive is apple using? Is it Hitachi, Fujitsu, Seagate? I'm hoping for Hitachi as they are extremely quiet and a good tradeoff in terms of speed/power consumption. Please confirm.

Mine had the Hitachi 5K500 travelstar.

So the 5400rpm is probably always Hitachi and the 7200 is Seagate?

Right. Which is kind of ironic given that real-world benchmark tests show that the Hitachi TravelStar 5K500 is slightly faster on average than the Seagate 7200.4.

I think the Hitachi is a "5K500.B", and I'm not sure what the B revision entails, but I've read a bunch of reviews where people complain that the original 5K500 was too thick to fit in their laptops -- 12,5 mm vs the standard 9 mm. I can see why this would be an issue with Macs in particular since Apple has shaved off every millimeter to make the case thin. So maybe the "B" is a 9 mm version of the 5K500.

Yes it's 5K500.B, a two platter drive. It is normal height 9.5mm.

5K500 first revision was a three platter drive, that's why it was thicker.

Ah. There you go.

Hitachi appears to be Apple's go-to OEM for 2.5" drives. The 5K500.B didn't start shipping until December 2008 so I guess that's why the stock drives were 320 GB until now.

Hitachi rarely makes the fastest drives (desktop or notebook), but they're usually good mid level performers when you compare them to other drives in their price range.
