fyi, all brands are more or less the same

apple uses the manufacturer that gives them the best deal. they dont say only use seagate or western digital

yep, I know they're more or less the same but i know some drivers are quieter than others which is what I'm interested in :)

My 2.93 UMBP 17" came with a seagate 7200rpm. I also had Hitachi 7200rpm and don't see any difference in speed.

My 2.66GHz 15" UMBP has a Seagate drive. I could have sworn the first one I had (this is a replacement) had a Hitachi, although I could be mistaken.

Can't tell any difference in speed or noise.

My 15" 2.53 UMBP came with a crappy 5400rpm Hitachi drive. Yanked it out right away and replaced it with an Intel SSD. Didn't even bother powering up the notebook with it installed :)

i'll let ya'all know what i get. i'll be happy with a seagate or hitachi though it'll cool if i got a WD. Never had a WD before.

FWIW, i just put a 320gb Hitachi 7200rpm in my laptop and it is without a doubt louder than the stock Hitachi 5400rpm. BUT its not that loud and no big deal. If i never had a 5400rpm before, i would probably think this was pretty much silent.

Honestly, i haven't really noticed any improvement in performance. *shrug*
