It's a late 2008 unibody aluminum 2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2GB memory, 160 gigs of storage. the first aluminum macbook, not a pro. It has been upgraded to Lion, but the iLife is '09.
It has about a 2 hour battery life, and the battery is removable w/ replacements sold on the apple store site. It is a little slow, and often has to be restarted from sleep because it has problems waking up. I have the original box, cords and discs.

The apple store recycling program estimates ~$300 that they'd give me to trade it in, but could I get more by selling it elsewhere?

You could get more than $300 simply by putting it up for bid on Ebay. This is pretty much guaranteed. I rarely see them go for anything under $500. $600 seems like a common price point I've seen for them. If you do sell though, it's better sooner than later. The unibody mimics the current design of the MacBook Pro, which is scheduled for a complete overhaul (potentially) and in the event that this materializes (which is probable at this point), you'll lose value and not be able to sell your MacBook for much. The recycling program is a nice, no hassle arrangement, but if you want the value of the MacBook in your pocket put it up on Ebay.

That's the model I have. Best Buy will give you $502 in trade-in on a gift card, lots of people buy Amazon gift cards with those. That's the way I'm heading. My battery won't last more than a few hours anymore and I'd like to pick up an iMac or a Mac Mini since I almost exclusively use my iPad now for most everything.
