What can the rMB output via HDMI?

I'm a little confused about this. Apple says it can only go up to 1920x1080p via HDMI with their multi-port adapter. If I run an external monitor at all, I want one of those 21:9 displays (2560x1080)

Is the rMB really limited to 1920x1080p via HDMI, or is that just with Apple's adapter?
