Just canceled my '16 M1 Max with 32 GB and all cores. It was scheduled to arrive on November 9.

What motivated me to do this?

I checked the Apple site yesterday. I see in a corner of my eye that a 16GB '16 M1 Pro is available at the end of November; in small print it says "Available at the shop".

Amazing. Today? If I buy it now, I can sell it next month for good money and continue on the better machine from Nov 9 on. After ordering the lower-spec machine, I was able to pick it up within two hours. Once all my stuff had been restored, I began working on it.

The 1GB Keynote opens instantly. Normally, it doesn't. OCR-ing images, always 3-8 seconds is now seamless. Finding certain keywords among the 1.000.000 records in the database was also instant. The time it takes to open my super long favorite list in Safari on any machine is always 5 seconds or more. Even on the M1 MBP or the MBP ''16 Intel 32 Gb MBP, I had to be patient. What about the 16 Gb M1 Pro? Here's your list sir. Just in a blink of an eye.

Of course, this is the most important test: does it run CIV6 smoothly? Yup.

Whatever I threw at the machine, it executed it fast and flawlessly. That's all I need from a machine. M1 Max, bye bye. Do you also wonder if M1 Pro is overkill for you? Answer the poll at the top of this posting :)

I just took the plunge and ordered the 16" base model after a lot of doubting and reconsidering. I'm happy to read about your positive experience with the base model.

I'm sure that there's a lot of people who will be able to push a maxxed out M1 Max to the max, but for most 'regular' power users, the M1 Pro will probably be plenty for the next couple of years.

Yes. To be honest, since 2005 I try to buy the best possible specced Mac. This is the very first time I didn't.

The flaw in your original plan was the preconfigured models do not seem to have any store supply problems. And if not in stock, just wait a few days. Stores get regular replenishments.

The bottom line M1Pro probably is except: 1) I keep my machines until they either fall apart or some critical software, like H&R block income tax won’t work because of the system, 2) I need at least a 15 inch screen for the photo work I do. 3) I need to be mobile.

My current MBP is a late 2013, that can no longer run the current system. It has nine keys that I can no longer see the letters. I has a battery that is good for about 70 minutes.

If Apple made an M1 with a 15 inch screen, I would have probably purchased it, but the M1Pro will stay with me until I’m 80 years old. At that point I may either be dead, or not into it anymore, and if I’m still doing photography, then I will buy the next great thing.

I have to order online. My nearest apple store is 175 miles away.

I don't wonder if it is overspeced for me. I know it is. Thus I have not ordered the 14" or 16" Mxx MBP. I have a M1 Air for travel and use when watching TV, and just ordered a Mac Mini M1 as a secondary desktop system (Linux/Windows with 32 GB , Nvidia 3070s, and M.2 SSDs is primary). I use cloud systems for most of my heavy-duty ML work/learning.

Honestly, these new MacBooks are overkill for most people to begin with. I suspect that’s why Apple refuses to manufacture a 15” Air model. They know it will kill half of their MacBook Pro sales.

Definitely this.

I replaced my 12" MacBook and Mac mini with a 16GB M1 MacBook Air and USB-C display earlier this year, and while I'm super tempted to pick up a 16" Pro, I simply cannot justify the purchase. The M1 with upgraded memory handles my workflow without breaking a sweat and likely will for years, so as badly as I want to upgrade it'd just be extreme overkill for me. I'd love the bigger screen though, so I'd be all over a larger MacBook Air... but I'm afraid you're right, the will never happen.
