1) It's the first major design revision in quite some time. The 3GS was really only a minor upgrade, and was cosmetically almost identical. The iPhone 4 has a new look and is quite SEXY, so everybody wants one!

2) More customers are eligible for upgrades this time because of AT&T "generous" offer to move up eligibility dates. So of course, there are going to be more people upgrading than in a normal cycle.

3) Perhaps all of those non-iPhone owners who bought iPads were so smitten with them that they also want iPhones now as well? ;-)

I think the new look has alot to do with it. Plus, the higher resolution screen and 720p camera help out.

all the 3G two year contract people waiting for the "next big iPhone"

well, it's here and the 3GS people want it too.

Well, a lot of iPhone 3G users were eligible for a full upgrade, plus AT&T changing around the eligibility dates (+6). The iPhone 3GS remains the top selling iPhone...until next week.

Right. 3G buyers were a new breed because previous iphone wasn't subsidized. A lot of them passed over 3GS because they weren't eligible and/or the design was pretty much the same. Now, all those people are eligible, plus a good portion of 3GS owners likely tend to upgrade early anyway, so it's a perfect storm of conditions, on top of it being an awesome phone.

The carefully planned "leak" and all the controversy that surrounded it certainly hasn't hurt sales.

It fixed any deficiencies the previous Iphones had. No front-facing camera? Check. Higher resolution screen? Check, 720p recording? Check. The list goes on. It is taking on the competition by the horns with the Apple brand quality to back it up.

That's also true for the 3G phone. The newer phone always fixes deficiencies in the older model.

The fact remains that both the 3GS and 4 are major upgrades.

I think its just a case of more people being available to upgrade combined with it looking like a different phone.

I totally agree with your point as well. Iphone haters always complained about the hardware not being up to par with the competition. This Iphone now has the most beautiful screen in the phone market. The 3GS was an upgrade, but it was incremental compared to this one. I was an original Iphone owner and wasn't that impressed with the 3G and 3GS. I tried exploring some other smart phones to see if it was all hype. My Nokia N97 was horrible. I currently have an N900 that I am extremely impressed with. I was almost sure that I wasn't going to get the Iphone 4 until the stats were revealed.

1) Hard to really say since we don't know how many units Apple planned for the launch.

2) In U.S. all 3G and many 3GS owners eligible -- that is a huge upgrade base to start from.

3) 10 country simultaneous launch.
