Microsoft has no interest in making WMP (and it's codecs) work for OS X (Tiger specifically). They suck.

However, you can get 99% of your WMV file to play in Quicktime by getting the $9.99 codec plugin from http://www.flip4mac.com, look for the "WMV Player" in the product section.

i installed a large collection of codecs at one time then added a few here and there. qt may not support indeo, if not then i will remove it, anyone else know about this? thanks for the reponses, maybe we could put together here a comprehensive list of all the possible codecs you could want that are applicable to qt and mac...

AFAIK, those Indeo codecs were only supported in QT for OS9.

EDIT: I also noticed that you already have the Flip4Mac codecs.

yellow, thanks for the reminder on flip4mac. i had downloaded the trial version a while back and forgot about it. i was able to play some wmv movies in QT but they kept stopping before the end, i just re-read the license and after the trial period it will only play half the file :)

i just bought it and installed it.

any others anyone?

I hear FLAC often enough from nerd forums, and seeing its not on your list, I'll add that codec. I'd like to see some pro-codecs such as Microcosm, Bitjazz Sheervideo, Aurora Extreme, Blackmagic Design and Cinewave 10-bit/16-bit.

lucaero, i had a coldplay concert on FLAC that i couldnt play. i used a great little app called FLACer and changed it to AIFF format, it worked beautifully.

why am i doing what?

if you mean listing these codecs its because i think it would benefit all users of QT to have a comprehensive list of all codecs that would make QT the best player it can be. there are always complaints about QT not playing this and that file, we all know that QT should add many more codecs to make it better, then we wouldnt need Mplayer, VLC, WMP, Cog, Real Player and on and on. do you have a problem with this?

i dont know when or if i will ever use these codecs, thats why i posted to also find out which ones are useful, which ones are outdated etc. i paid for QT pro and i want a player that will play almost all formats not just a select apple friendly few. if i can add third party codecs that makes QT pro a better player then i will continue to try and build the perfect beast, i would think that everyone would want to do that.

so far i can take it that i should remove the indeo codecs, is this right?

Adding codecs to QT

I would love to see the Open Sourced Dirac project on QT. Its a project run by the BBC R&D group - really interesting results. High compression - great quality, very very comparable to H.264 in this early stage.

It uses Wavelet technology instead of block technology (like H.264) but is currently in developement stage. I do hope one day they'll make it multi-threaded and PPC-aware.

x264 has been made multi-threaded, making multi-processor machines much more useful during encoding, speeding it up a great deal - great for handbrake.

I'm fairly certain that all the Indeo and Vivo codecs were old OS9-only ones, and they're not doing anything at all in OSX. There are some others in there that look old to me, but I'm not 100% sure.

Me, I installed the beta of DivX6, 3ivX, Flip4Mac, and an Ogg codec, and that pretty much covers all the AVIs and Movs I've thrown at it--very little else is used these days. There are a handfull of oddball codecs that are officially supported by Apple, but QT player should automatically ask you if you want them. As obscure as it is I do wish that there was a VP6 codec for QT, but so far VP3 is the only one available (it, however, is listed on Apple's site, so you'll get asked if you need it).

The only thing QT won't play is OGM files (and a lot of AVIs are actually mislabled OGMs); I haven't found a codec yet that will "teach" QT how to handle OGM files--is there one that I'm not aware of?

*snip*

Could you zip up your Users/Library/Quicktime folder, and upload it? (PM me if you need hosting). That would be really nice.
