What could this possibly be behind the search box? I'm unable to discover in the code what it is. It is extremely strange.

Haha no sorry bad wording That is a screenshot of the stuff around the search box. It is a green background not a border It's the white rectangle thingy that is vertical.

Could be a background image. Would have to see the site to know for certain.

Don't think its a background image. Also it's not highlightable.

My first guess would be background image as well, set using the background css property. Background images are not generally selectable. Use Firebug or Web developer toolbar for Firefox to have a look at their css and see if they have applied a background image to the search form.
