What did I do? My user data is gone

I need your help, i think im screwed. So here is my problem. I just bought a time capsule because my MacBook Pro was maxed out. I was in the process of backing up through time machine and trying to copy my user folder to the TC. The MacBook became unresponsive and required a hard reset. When it rebooted my user data was gone ( pics, movies, music, and docs). All programs and OS were intact and some user data probably from the partial backup in time machine. The computer appears to be returned back to factory and most user data gone. Has anyone heard of this and know if there is any way to recover my user data? Of course I don't have a back-up that was the reason for the TC. Any help would be much appreciated.
