Reading the forums here and elsewhere, you'd think that Apple announced a bunch of brushed aluminum, retina displayed, Thunderbolt equipped cow turds this morning. (Well, maybe not the Pro cow turds.)
Maybe I haven't been a Mac user long enough to get jaded (or I've been a Windows user too long that I've gotten really jaded), but I think there were a lot of goodies announced today that I'm looking forward to. How about you? What did you like from today's keynote? (And don't say "nothing because Apple has lost it's way since Steve Jobs died.")
I'll start off with my list of five things:
1. Dictation. I'm a writer, so it will be a great help to have dialogue transcribed as I speak it. I also like that it should work with any Mac app without any third-party drivers.
2. Facebook integration: The current iOS Facebook app is slow and cumbersome to use. I like how Twitter is integrated with iOS, and I'm looking forward to seeing Facebook linked in the same way. If it's implemented the same way in OS X, it will be great.
3. Notification Center: It seems like a cleaner system of displaying notifications than what's in Lion, I like that I can swipe and view notifications when needed.
4. Mountain Lion's upgrade price: Only USD 20? I've been through numerous Windows upgrades, and I never had one that cost only USD 20! Furthermore, various grocery stores in our area (Southern California) are offering a USD 10 gift card at their store if you buy USD 50 worth of iTunes cards (which you can also use to buy apps). So, you can save even more!
5. The next generation MacBook Pro: No, I'm not going to throw away my three-month old MBP to buy one. I know that this will be what all computers will be like when it's time to upgrade mine.
I remember when the first MacBook Air came out in 2008. They cost about the same as the new MacBook Pro, and it also seemed like a bit of an overpriced outlier product. Now, the MacBook Air is the most affordable of the MacBooks, and everybody wants to make a laptop just like it.
So, I can look forward to replacing my MBP with a laptop just like it at a great price. Maybe Apple will even upgrade the Mac Pro by then.
