typing that name showed me how old i am as it made me think of when Apple replaced the Mac SE and the tradition at the time was to add an X to show it had the 68030 architecture, but they went with SE30 instead...

anyway i digress. have an XS, its fine. i dont tend to update often, it replaced a 6 which replaced a 3S. but its battery was **** and i got it replaced and thats **** too, and ive just started having problems on calls...

i only bought it because there wasnt a cheap decent model at the time, the shop didnt have an XR.

would a SE3 be faster? better camera?

I'm pretty sure the XR didn't have 5G either, so that's kind of a big one longer term.

Faster, yes, but would you notice it? I would think the Xs still performs well on iOS15.
Battery life, both would probably be as "bad." The Xs is not known for great battery life to begin with. Probably going to be around the same.

The Xs has nice OLED screen. Going to a smaller LCD like the SE might feel like a downgrade.

In terms of camera, you will lose telephoto. Since both the Xs and 2022 SE don't have night mode, I'm guessing majority of photos will be a wash. HDR will be slightly better on the 2022 SE.

I would only go for the 2022 SE if you must have TouchID and 5G.

In day to day use you won’t notice much of a speed difference. What you will notice immediately is the screen quality. LCD is the SE is very dated. Literally the same screen from the iPhone 7.

The thing you interact with the most will look worse (LCD screen vs the XS OLED) but you’ll most likely get used it quickly. No more gestures but you get the tried and true home button.

Not sure if the speakers would be better than the XS. Did Apple upgrade the speaker system on the 2020 SE?

Not everyone thinks OLED screens are better than LCD. For me, iPhone OLED screens are unacceptable due to their flickering.

It’s not a subjective thing, the actual panels and technology of OLED *is* better than LCD and the gains in picture quality is substantial. In terms of picture quality, it is much better.

Unfortunately, you have a condition where you are sensitive to PWM. Most people do not have this sensitivity. If both panels were OLED panels and one has PWM that negatively affects you, then of course the non-PWM OLED panel would better suit you.

Most people don’t have this sensitivity, so OLED is superior vs the LCD.

You could also 'upgrade' the xs to the iphone 11 which has a better camera in terms of night time exposure, although you will lose the telephoto, you gain the wide lens.

I don’t know what you’re talking about. I have an iPhone 12 Mini with an OLED screen and instantly noticed a massive improvement in image quality over my iPhone 8. No flickering going on either… perhaps it’s an issue with Apple’s older OLED panels?

big difference in cost but I guess you are right.

you lose quality and face ID: huge down grade in screen quality and arguably build (although some people prefer aluminum to steel)

you get 5g and A15, touch id

touch ID vs face ID is a toss up. Entirely preference. Im more camp Face ID but there are times I wished I had touch ID

better image processor on A15 but its using the same camera from the iPhone 8

I have a Xs laying around and the A12 is plenty fast still, no issues with performance on it. Camera is still good. Neither has night mode.

my opinion, but SE3 is not what id consider an upgrade at all. For me an upgrade means building "up" on prior technology. Even the regular 11 is arguable, as there is a big loss in screen quality, despite the rest of the device being essentially an upgrade. From the Xs, "true" upgrades, 11 pro is an upgrade. 12 and 12 pro are upgrades. 13 and 13 pro are upgrades.

It's not much of an upgrade at the moment IMO. I have compared both models and the XS is slightly slower, but not by much. The SE is inferior or the same in pretty much every other way. The camera is weird because it is a mix of worse and better. It's the iPhone 8 camera which is older than XS, but backed up by the quite a bit newer A15. I did notice slo-mo looked noticeably grainer on the XS. Only the XS has a telephoto lens.

Basically the speed difference is the only actual pro for the SE, so maybe for gaming or anything else resource intensive. But even for that the XS isn't bad. Longevity is something else to consider.

If you use an LCD screen on a phone that's supposed to have an OLED screen (iPhone X) it will damage the display driver eventually..
Sure that's probably true in the long run BUT, by the time the driver is inoperable, you'd already have upgraded to the new generation phone.

I just noticed this thread and haven't read it through so I may be repeating, BUT... the XS is a class act with a 5.8 inch screen striking the perfect balance between pocketability and usability, and it boasts an LED display (admittedly not the brightest LED display) that beats the pants off an outmoded LCD. Sadly, it seems you bought a rogue one, that can happen.
