I went swimming with my first gen a few weeks ago and had it replaced with a 3GS. The iPhone itself will actually turn on when you plug it in to the wall charger and it says to connect to iTunes. When I do connect it to iTunes nothing happens. Are there people out there who wouldn't mind a water damaged iPhone for physical parts?

Great, I thought this was going to be the standard thread about water-damaged iPhones. I would think you'd be able to get someone to buy the phone from you on Ebay for a much reduced price. Doesn't hurt to try. Just be upfront with them as you were on this post.
