Hi All,
apologies for the long post, i have come from an Imac to setting up a laptop "desktop" solution.
I work in the health and fitness field, majoring in exercise and nutritional sciences.
Most of my day is basic spreadsheets, emails, and managing my app (i am not the developer) and a lot of research.
due to the nature of my business, i do have to shoot video and do basic edits for educational purposes, as well as social media, write content for various publications and so forth. as well as present seminars here and there.
we have also taken up music as a hobby quite seriously, i play guitar and my better half the piano, and she sings. so we will be experimenting with garage band and later logic pro x, and we have already decided on FCPX for video.
currently my set up is:
- Macbook pro 16" Base Model
- Dell 3818 ultra wide monitor connected via thunderbolt
- Focusrite 2i2 to control my speakers
- JBL L305 referenace speakers on stands
- Rode NTG1 Mic and arm
- Yamaha cable reference headphones
- B&W PX blue tooth headphones
- Qdos hub with wireless charging
- Qdos 7 in one hub
- handful external HDD and 1 x SSD 512gb
- Logitech Master MX 2
- Logitech k-780 key board
- 2018 11 Ipad pro
my problem is the hubs, they work fine on the road or in a pinch, but they inconsistent as a desk set up, 2 HDD and my phone charging is too much and it fails. so i will keep these as travel hubs.
if i run USB drives into the monitor, i get error messages every time it goes to sleep.
i am considering the Caldigit TS3 Plus, to try and get a one cable solution to my laptop, and tidy up my desk. and i want to LAN it up now.
i am also then looking at storage solutions, we stream and or download everything we watch, via plex to our apple tvs and ipads etc, so was considering a NAS or simply a RAID system of sorts.
- will the Caldigit t3plus sort out my desk issues ? do i even need it ?
- Recomendations on storage solutiuons, i am no professional videographer or music producer so don't need a lot.
- any other peripherals i am missing, that i should maybe be considering.
once this is finalized, i can then go have a proper desk made to spec. i have not looked into mixers and such, that can grow as we and our knowledge grows.
what i am scared of doing is spending on the Caldigit for example, when there is a simple solution with the gear i currently own. i am not the most tech savvy guy, so be kind lol
