What do I need to know about Airtag basics?

Ordered Airtags yesterday - got a set of 4 and some keychains, so I can give each of my daughters an Airtag and keychain for Christmas. That conveniently leaves one extra, which I’m gonna keep for myself. ;-p

I understand how they work, but any particular tidbits yall have to offer on actual use?

Background battery drain is horrendous. I have finally deleted my AirTags until they fix this.

This was my iPhone 12 Pro Find My drain in the last 24h; Find My/Air Tag took about 40% of my battery:

Well that doesn’t make me feel better, and of course I got the Airtags engraved, so I can’t send them back.

Oh well - do you have to keep that on at all times?

The battery usage problems are atypical (rare).

AirTags are very good for key rings. Also to keep an eye on your luggage when travelling. Beyond that there is an elaborate system of checks and beeps that makes them probably far more hassle than they’re worth.

Keys, luggage, cars, bicycles. They're useful to help track down stolen items if you're on it soon enough before the anti-stalking features kick in.
