M friend gave me his first-gen iPhone. I want to unlock it so I can pop a SIM from a European carrier in it when I am traveling overseas.

Are there simple ways to unlock an original iPhone? I'm not interested in jailbreaking it, just unlocking it.

Any help for a n00b would be appreciated!

EDIT: I have a Mac with OS X 10.6

Yeah, there is no way to unlock it without jailbreaking..
You need to download QuickPwn and the right firmware which you can find in the iPhone settings. Ask if you need full instructions:)

QuickPwn is outdated software and only ever worked on Windows anyway. The OP needs to use either PwnageTool or blackra1n to jailbreak, then install BootNeuter to neuter his bootloader and unlock his phone. Some people also have to delete the lockdown folder, too.
