All,

This is my first Mac and I'm trying to figure out the best way to prevent the macbook pro retina from going to sleep but the display to sleep so I can download a large file that may take up to 4hrs.

I've read I can set the sleep preference to 'Never' and manually dim the display or I can use Caffeine and manually dim the display. (this is what I did last night)

Just wondering what process you guys use for downloads and what not that requires your machine to stay on.

THanks!

That's basically all one has to do right there ^^^.

Thanks for the reply...just making sure I'm doing it right!

Or you could just disable the automatic sleep function permanently so you don't have to worry about things like this.

That's what I do.

How do you do this? Settings?

In System Settings under Energy Saver just set it like in my screen grab.

I have it set for the computer to never go to sleep, and I have a hot corner set up to put the display to sleep. I just start the download, point at the designated corner, and walk away.

What progams are you all using to download where you need to change energy saver preferences or install third party software to prevent sleep?

I've never had a problem with my Macs sleeping while downloading. Transmission prevents sleep on its own (there is an option for this in preferences). Large downloads in safari also haven't been a problem, maybe safari also prevents sleep while downloading a file or maybe this is achieved by the periodic writes to the drive as the file is downloading?

You can also use hot corners to manually turn your display off. I have mine set up so that if I mouse over to the lower left corner, the screen turns off, but the computer stays on. I have mine set to never sleep when plugged in, unless I close the lid, of course.
