What does Apple do with a volume button that fell off?

So today i was at Target, and someone called me so when I took out my phone i heard a noise and when I looked on the ground I saw that the volume button had fallen off! I was wondering if Apple repairs or replaces the phone in this situation or if it counts as "physical damage".

Oh and if I go to the apple store do I have to have an appointment or can I just walk in and tell them?

I believe you need a genius appointment, not sure though, depending on your area etc.

I think they can replace the button, if they can't, they will either send yours off for repair or replace it on the spot, again depending on the location you live in.
