What does Apple do with products that are returned within the 14 day no-questions-asked return window? (I believe it's 14 days in the UK, return window lengths might vary elsewhere.)

I ask because I'm seeing a number of people here torn between a Pro model or the new Air saying that they're ordering both and will keep the one they prefer and return the other. That might just be a trivial number of die-hard Apple users/followers but if a fair number of people adopt this strategy then Apple might be getting more early returns this September compared to other years. Does Apple resell them as new stock? Sell them as refurbished? I'm assuming they don't junk/recycle them?

If they sell them as new then we'll be none the wiser but if they sell them as refurbs then might there be some modest bargains out there in 3 or 4 weeks?

This is purely curiosity on my part. While I might consider iPhone Air next year once reviewers and real life users have confirmed that the battery life claims are accurate and once I've tried one in-store to see if the size & weight difference really matters to me, this year I've gone for a Pro Max as usual. I don't really have any issues with the PM size and weight but maybe that's because I don't know what I'm missing and will have a "wow" moment when I handle one in-store. There's only one way to find out but I'm kind of thinking that I don't want to do it on the 19th when I pick up my PM because it would be a shame to give myself instant buyer's remorse.

This has been discussed before and from memory they go into the stock used for warranty replacements, some countries also have a refurb store, some countries have staff sales, corporate inventory and probably other things I’ve missed but they are never reboxed as new.
