What does changing NFSHomeDirectory and Record Name affect?

A while ago I changed my NFS Home Directory name and my Record Name to just my first name instead of my first and last name and I lost all my files. Soon I was able to recover all my files back but I had one problem. When I tried to open Microsoft Office it said my license files were missing and I had to reinstall MS Office. So I did. Now, I am worried about what else this incident could have effected. I haven't noticed any problems but there still could be some.
