What does it mean when a flash drive starts writing super slow?

I've noticed in the last few months the flash drive I've been using for backups has started to get real, real slow when writing to it. What causes this?

How much free space is left on it?

It could also be badly fragmented.

You might consider "wiping" it and starting out fresh by re-initializing, then re-copying all your data back onto it.

It's only about 1/2 full (4 of 8 GB).

I would a) make sure I had these files in another place and b) reformat and put the files back on it.

As suggested it might be badly fragmented - which would effect the performance.
