What does it mean when the sleep light flashes 3 times?

What does this mean?
When this happens to my computer, I am unable to use any boot commands, not even PRAM reset. I have to wait till it manually resets via taking out the batt.

Possibly RAM related issues.

When does it happen, when you switch it on because it could be that you are pressing and holding it and then it goes into firmware update mode.
