What does it mean when you can see a file but not icon?

I have a few files on my brand NEW iMac 2012 where I can see the file name, but there's no image above it as the icon, for example my aperture library (which was brought in through time machine)

This is not an iMac issue so much as it is a Mac OS X issue. Have you bothered to look or post in Mountain Lion forum?
