I noticed the computer was acting a little weird. I just added an external HD yesterday (not sure if that's related), and I was trying to view folders of images on that drive. I noticed that Cover Flow was a little funky in that I was just getting the generic icon rather than image preview in a lot of the time. This wasn't happening from folders on the internal HD, though. So I tried to copy a folder from the external drive to the internal drive to see if the same thing would happen. The folder wouldn't copy right. Or, rather, it wouldn't open and I couldn't delete it because it was "in use." Then I noticed my Activity Monitor was showing a number of items in red (not responding, maybe? I can't remember what they said specifically). I did stop a couple of the items to see what would happen (loginwindow was one, I remember, and a couple that didn't really seem very important...maybe Preview was one of them? It happened very fast, I can't remember...). Then I got the blue screen with the spinning black wheel thingy. Ultimately, I had to shut power off to the computer at the wall because it didn't look like it was going to go back to normal otherwise.
So maybe one of the processes I stopped caused this? Although, there was obviously a problem leading up to that.
Everything seems to be working fine now. Any input is appreciated, thanks!
