I hadn't ever really noticed it before, but I can't say as I've seen it on any of my VMs (Ubuntu, FreeBSD, OpenSolaris).

A few internet searches turned up nothing. :confused:

Did you consider the ls man page? It should have been your first port of call:

If the file or directory has extended attributes, the permissions field printed by the -l option is followed by a '@' character
 
Why use the man pages when one can come to MR and get sarcastic answers from the Demi Gods? :p
