though?

(Yeah tacky editing/posting skills I know )

For thinking differently in exactly the same way. You are all a bunch of effing sheep.

In the Mike Jones model the "S" stands foe SHI-YAAA!

who, Mike Jones, who? Mike Jones is a bout to blow

I would assume 'speed' (i.e. dextroamphetamine): it is the same exact phone, but on speed. And yes, 'iPhone 3GS' is a lame product name. But I suppose it could be worse: they could have called it the iPhone 3G AMP, or (following the late 90s - early 00s trend) the iPhone eXtreme! A phone so extreme that you will want to chug a Mt. Dew while skateboarding down the face of a cliff after jumping out of an airplane.

I mean, remember Airport EXTREME!, Quartz Extreme, etc... In fact, in 2007, there were interblog rumours of a future product that was actually called the iPhone Extreme--it eventually became the iPhone 3G.

Edit: I just hope that Apple doesn't keep using the '3G' designator with each subsequent future iPhone model. If they do, we'll have to endure product names akin to those used in the world of GPUs: the iPhone 3GTS Pro XTX Turbo Championship Hyper-Fighting Edition ;).

Next iPhone will undoubtedly be the iPhone 4G

^^ But will it actually have true "4G" wireless technology? I'm not sure if networks and cellular companies will be in a position to deploy what could be considered '4G' level infrastructure 1 year from now. Sprint has ads claiming that they are the "first wireless 4G network," but I think they just mean that they are implementing slightly faster EVDO service. To be honest, I'm not even sure where the 'breakpoint' lies in defining a protocol as "3G," "post-3G" or "4G."

so for the first REAL response to you besides 'search'... it stands for Speed - they said it at the keynote.
