what does "your mileage may vary" mean?

I keep reading "your mileage may vary" in mac software reviews... what does this mean?

Its originally from car ads where they would post the EPA gas mileage rating for a car. These ratings were notoriously inaccurate as they were done on testbeds rather than in the real world. Therefore, your mileage may vary (from that posted in the ad).
